Why Go Smoke-Free?
To protect the HEALTH of restaurant patrons, employees, and the public at large from the hazards of secondhand smoke exposure.
- There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke according the US Surgeon General
- The CA Air Resources Board declared secondhand smoke a toxic air contaminant placing it in the same category as substances such as asbestos and benzene.
- In 2008 Stanford University Researchers found that levels of secondhand smoke exposure in outdoor spaces such as outdoor dining patios is comparable to levels of secondhand smoke exposure found indoors where smoking is unrestricted.
- Breathing secondhand smoke outdoors causes many people to suffer immediate symptoms including breathing difficulties, eye irritation, headache, nausea, and asthma attacks.
It's good for Fremont and it's good for the city of Fremont!
- Because 86% of Californians do not smoke, creating smoke free policies for everyone to enjoy and benefit from is a good business move.
- Other cities have adopted similar policies with poitive results and feedback. Cities in Alameda County with 100% smoke-free outdoor dining: Berkeley, Emeryville, Newark, Oakland and Pleasanton.
